Our Volksvegan Adventure is a chronicle of the adventures of Megan, Seneca, and our 1982 VW bus which we converted to run on bio-diesel and waste vegetable oil. We will post about our conversion process using a greasecar kit, the restoration of our beloved bus, and our many veggie-fueled travels.

Hi Tyson - we first started with a diesel vanagon, which are rare and hard to find, but it definitely makes the conversion MUCH easier. If you start with a gas, you'll have to put in a diesel engine first, and convert everything over into diesel before you can add the grease system. We got our grease system & parts from Greasecar: http://www.greasecar.com/

However, we are no longer running on waste veggie oil, after lots of trial & error and research, we decided to use bio-diesel instead (which is made from wvo and is less experimental and more reliable). Most new diesel engines can already run on bio-diesel just fine, and for older engines you just need to replace any natural rubber seals with synthetic ones.

Good luck with your conversion! :)

Awesome chronicle of the burn and I'm so thrilled to hear you had a great journey! The Temple was indeed truly beautiful this year and your tales of VW woes definitely made me smile (in a "oh-yes-I've-been-there" kind of way).

Hi Anja, thanks for the comment. WVO is definitely a lot of work and not for everyone, but I'm glad to hear from others giving it a try. Thanks for the info on the fuel filters, good to know! Best of luck with Gaia! :)

Hi there... a friend sent me your link because my dream is to live in a vw bus... diesel of course, and run by wvo. right now, my daily driver is a 1980 vw rabbit diesel, (her name is gaia!) which i am running right now on wvo. I feel your pain - have had to do an inj. pump rebuild myself - not fun! (among many other problems!) But - have some advice, which has been so helpful to me. Friends of mine own enviofuel in corvallis, or. I have one of their super fuel filters installed, which is an incredible asset - i swear by it! if youd like more info, or to chat about wvo/bio, or old diesels in general, you now have my email! best of luck to you!!!

Thanks Megan! I've loved looking at your site(s) and seeing about all your great adventures. I've been to several of the places you've visited, so it's wonderful to see those places again... and to see new places to discover! I can't wait to be on the coast. mmmmmmmmmm!

Hi Maya,
I don't think there's a specific VW mechanic in the area, but there are quite a few places in Fort Bragg that will work on them. I see a LOT of vanagons around here, so I suspect that many of the shops work on them. I think there are a few individuals that work on them as well. My boyfriend does most of the work on our van though, so other than Angel's Muffler in Fort Bragg, we haven't really taken it in anywhere here yet.

Good luck and welcome to Mendo! :)
